Sophie

On Wednesday night Mike took Sophie out for her nightly walk. I wimped out because it was so cold. We've had record breaking cold temps here and I was snuggled up on the couch with a blanket and had no desire to freeze my butt off taking Sophie for her walk. Just before they got back home, Sophie was running around in the field right by our house and somehow ran into a car. Mike had called for her but he thinks maybe she was chasing a rabbit or something because she ran the opposite direction and right into the side of a car. The driver stopped; she felt so bad, but it really wasn't her fault. At first Mike thought Sophie might be really hurt, but it turned out that she only got a few minor cuts and bruises and one serious wound on her front leg. Sophie is one lucky dog.

This all happened around 7:30 at night. I called Claudia and she immediately dropped everything and came to get the girls and kept them for the night (Thank you Saint Claudia!!!), while Mike and I took Sophie to the emergency vet center in Ft. Pierce (about 30 minutes away). We were there until nearly midnight. Sophie's injury was not life threatening so she kept getting pushed back as more serious cases came in. Understandable, but not fun. I read through 6 magazines, cover to cover. My allergies really started to kick in too. Two days later I am still dealing with an itchy eye!

Sophie is on the mend now. Mike stayed home with her yesterday and I am home with her today. She has to wear a collar so she can't pull out the staples that are holding her arm (technically her leg) wound together. We're still worried that she might use her back leg to scratch at the cut, so we are being pretty protective. She is not supposed to run or jump until the staples come out next week. That's going ot be the big challenge unless we keep her crated all week! She was so excited to see the girls when we all got home from school yesterday. She kept trying to lick us, but the collar prevents her from getting close enough! She was so frantic! Funny, in a sad kind of way.

This is a picture of Sophie this morning. She looks kind of sad here, but she was just napping. The front leg is actually her back leg. You can see where they shaved her leg to clean up her cuts. Closest to Sophie's body you can see the leg that got the staples. I pulled her big cone collar off so she could get some rest. The first thing she did when I pulled it off was lick me and then she went down the hall to Kenzie's room to sleep! So I will just have to check on her every few minutes. Still not sure what we will do on Monday. . .
